Can someone identify these insects by their sound?
Wow! Put a little work into that didn't you
The damage to the trees looks like that done by Sawyer Beetles, there are a couple of species at least in your area. As for the sounds... well I can't tell from the video if the two things you're curious about are related... are the sounds coming from those holes in the tree or is it just nearby? I've heard that some Sawyers do make sounds as adults if they are distressed but I've never heard it myself. Did a quick net search for audio files of it but no luck.
I have to admit you've made me curious though, the noise seems more frog like to me but you're right there and I'm not... if you ever find out what's making the sound for sure I'd like to see another post from you... I really hate not knowing for sure.

Gerry: Thanks for answering me! I'm pretty fast with making videos. The best I can tell is that the sound is emanating from inside the tree. I looked very carefully for tree frogs of any kind--even one that might be camouflaged on the bark--and I didn't see any. I'm thinking of making another inspection tomorrow.
