Captive environment for Brazilian White-

clffdvr May 10, 2009 12:21 PM

Hello,

I have a 1 1/4" Brazilian White Knee. All the internet info says it's range includes northern Brazil. That area is smack inside the Amazon Basin, and very near the equator. I assume a captive would flourish best in an environment that matches it's native conditions. So I have it at 80F, with sessions of 85F. I keep the humidity relatively high, but I don't have any kind of reliable humidity gauge to actually measure a specific humidity, so I guess at that, aiming for 70%. So I keep the substrate slightly damp (read, not bone dry). He uses his hide, which I made from a 2 1/2 inch X 1" prescription bottle, taped over with duct tape so the the bottle would be dark. In a couple of days I'll get pinhead crickets for it. He stays there all day every day (three or four days now), which seems consistent with it's nervous nature. What do you guys think of this care plan?

Roger

I may not be the best person to answer this question since i'm only experienced with only one species (Avicularia avicularia) or Pink Toed Tarrantula if you preffer.

But personnaly i think you're doing fine. I even think you're giving too much importance to humidity and heat. You're definatly not doing anything wrong by caring for those things but tarrantulas don't require as much attention on that part. I know reptiles do but not tarrantulas.

Also if your T. does use whatever you gave her for a burrow, it's always a good sign. It means she likes the place and she's installed herself permanently.

All you gotta do now is to make sure she gets the food you give her and also make sure she has a water source. They don't drink alot but they still need to drink here and there between meals.

Good luck with your new pet and Congrats on finding your white knee

I forgot to say just one thing though.

If i'm not mistaking, white knees are arboreal species so you might want to add a nice climbing structure inside her container. It doesn't have to cover a whole section of the container, just anything she could climb on other than the sides of the container itself.

I have to go to work now but i could take a picture of what i gave mine if you ever want to see an example of what i mean.
My T. realy likes to climb on that thing i gave him. I just wouldn't know how to call it lol.

have a nice day
