I have my first T's, including a Mexican Red-Kneed T. The Red Kneed is about 18 months old and as healthy as can be.

She is large, so I call it a 'she'. The only problem I have with her is that she panics when I pick her up. Is there a way to tame this species? Other than putting my hand inside her cage 1X/wk, she is not bothered by any intruders.

I wouldn't say that taming is anything you can do with a tarantula. You can get them used to handling with repetition, but there is always the chance of it getting spooked and bolting.

I like to scoop a skittish T up with a deli cup first, then transfer to my hand. It makes the handling go much easier.

Tarantula's are too simple of an animal to be "Tamed" They Live on natural Instinct and cant comprehend or learn to be tamed, if anything they Hate being handled, There's no such thing as a "Tame" Tarantula, they just tolerant being handled some more than other's. Brachypelma smithi are good beginner T, but most likely if you have a skittish sling, you can expect to get haired alot when its an adult.
