Well I think I can help more this time than simply saying it's a Hover Fly species but I don't know which one... Blue-Eyed Katydid (Ischnomela pulchripennis)... I am however relying on the word of a third party so I won't swear to it.

Are you in Costa Rica? It's one of those places that probably has more unidentified insects than identified ones so satisfying your curiosity could prove... difficult

Hi Gerry, thanks for your help with the ID.
I was lucky enough to spend a fortnight in Costa Rica on tour from the UK and took alot of wildlife photos. The Katydid was my last insect to identify but still a few birds and plants to go(!)
Thanks again, Mark

Does that mean you found an exact identification for the Hover Fly? Please share if you did... half knowing is worse than not knowing .

If you want to toss a few of the birds and plants out... I love these "name that species" games.

Hi Gerry,

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's a bee fly called Hemipenthes celeris.
I think most of my unidentifiable plants are ornimentals as none of them appear in Gargiullo plant field guide. I'll have a go at posting them in the plant area...

But there isn't a plant area is there?!!

No there isn't, seems plants don't make good pets ... agree with you 100% btw on the identification of that fly. Thanks for passing the info along.

Gerry
