Brown Recluse(s) or not?

1npro Aug 04, 2010 01:27 PM

We (city folk) just moved into the country, and have been running into a lot of spiders on our property (outside on our walls and patio) Last night I was able to take a couple of photos of two of them (Mating or fighting, we aren't sure). I don't think they are recluses, but can someone please tell us what these are and whether or not we need to worry about them.

Not. Those are orb weaver spiders. Harmless. Brown recluse do not make much of a web and like dry dark places like closets, boxes, undisturbed clothes, etc. There are only two spiders you need to know how to identify: brown recluse and black widows. Fatalities from black widows is extremely rare today. Brown recluse bites rarely cause serious skin damage and many diagnosed bites are not brown recluse bites but rather other skin infections. Unless one sees the spider in the act of biting, one cannot say for certain that it was a brown recluse. All other native species of spider pose no serious threat to humans. Here is a great link to brown recluse information: http://dermatology.cdlib.org/DOJvol5num2/special/recluse.html
