Getting a Hissing Cockroach

jgnaturelover82 Sep 29, 2010 07:50 PM

I live in Powell,OH which is about a 20 minute drive from Columbus,OH and I was wondering where I would buy a Hissing Cockroach near where I live. I was reading online how you take care of them you need a medium to large aquarium that you would you for a reptile. You also need to use aspen litter for the bedding, you would have to buy one of those rock water disses that you use for a reptile and you have to give them greens, vetables and fruit. It also said to feed your pet hissing cockroach dog food but I was wondering if that is the wrong information on how I would take care of my hissing cockroach when I get one.

Hissers can be kept in a glas aquarium as long as you have a tight screen cover. I coat the top of the glass with about 2 inches of vaseline, as they can climb right up glass. They are fed a dry cat or dog food with high protien (30%) that I grind up with a coffe mill or food processor. Chopped apples and carrots and oranges seem to be their favorite. There are all kinds of substrate to use, or you don't need any. Cedar is toxic. I use coconut fiber for my colony of 60, but once they start breeding I won't use any. There's lots of useful info out there.
