How do they know?

gocatgo Jul 03, 2009 10:56 PM

It's that time of the year again.....time for the Frontline Plus flea drops! Actually I'm a little late but it's been just a week or so ago that the grandkids two dogs started showing signs of having a flea or two. So out comes the Frontline Plus. Pam carefully measures out one vile, dividing it 6 ways according to the weight of the pets. I use the large dog size for 2 dogs and 4 cats, thanks for somebody's wise advice on this board in 2003. At first, I was putting it on them once a month for the 3 hot summer months but then read on the Holistic Vet board that you only need to do it once per year. So for the past 4 years or so, we've been doing just one vile per year for the two dogs and four cats.

So just a couple of days ago, Pam was measuring out the doses for the cats and dogs and immediately the cats start acting like something is up! First off, I grabbed Samantha for her drop on the nap of her neck, and when I picked her up, she hissed and bit at me trying to scare me into putting her down. She was kicking her little feet and hissing like crazy as Pam put the drop on the back of her neck. There you go, Samantha, that didn't hurt now, did it?

Next was KatyKatt who was looking out the deck door at the two dogs who were looking in. I walked over toward Katy and she took off like a bat out of hell and ended up under my bed.

Well, OK, here's Katrina under the table. I bent down and picked her up but she was very unwilling to get flea drops on her too. She fought me the whole time, although it only took a couple of seconds.

Simba was last because he didn't try to take off or anything but sure didn't want any of those drops on him either. He tried squirming out of my hands but Pam was getting pretty fast by now.

Then we let the dogs in. Pucchi is the newest and is kind of unaware and didn't mind it at all but Gypsy thought that she could slink off and nobody would notice if she went into the front room. Wrong Gyspy! So she got hers but acted like she was being punished.

Still have KatyKatt who's hiding under my bed...so I got out a can of cat food. She always comes running in when she hears the can opening. True to her form, she let down her guard long enough to eat some food. That's when Pam just casually walked over to her, munching on her food, and put the drop on her the nap of her neck.

Another year of flea drops accomplished. But we wonder......How do they know?

Hi! Great to hear from you!

I have asked the same question before. Particularly for vet visits. Pookey, can somehow pick up a vibe on me.

The visits were 12 months apart prior to their becoming seniors and now are six months apart (unless there is a problem).

I casually go thru my normal morning shower and get-ready routine and when it is time to get Pookey, with no change in my routine or hint that I could tell I gave off, he's under the bed when I look for him. Every time. No other morning will he go under the bed.

I don't know how he knows it is time with months between visits. I don't get the carrier out early or anything. JUST MY NORMAL ROUTINE. It is the only morning you'll find him under the bed -- the morning he goes to the vet. Sometimes he'll go under the bed early on in my routine on vet day. I get up and get in the shower and he is already hiding. Perplexing...

Stanley was oblivious. Pookey could be under the bed and Stanley would nap away unaware of the impending vet vist doom.

Hi Tammy, good to talk to you again. It sounds like Pookey is doing great for being 18. And he get around very good for having only 3 legs. What a cat!

Yes, I do know what you're talking about when it comes to vet visits and hiding cats. Samantha so much as sees a cat carrier and she's a'kicking and a'fighting me the whole time that I try to put her in it. Actually it ends up with me stuffing her in it and zipping it up as fast as possible while she's letting out a pitiful meow. Then I get her to the vet. who is only a couple of blocks away, and she doesn't want to get out of the carrier.

It's much easier to put Simba in the carrier because David does him for me. He also gives him his meds when he needs any.

I had an appointment yesterday morning with the groomer for Simba and Katrina but Katrina had to get a distemper shot first so it was her turn for the vet. As soon as I got home from work Friday, I told the kids to get Katrina, and in a couple of minutes, Paula came in carrying the carrier with Katrina inside. So she was easy!

Seems like the kids are much more able than I am to get them in their carrier........ maybe because the cats don't suspect them?

As it turned out, both Simba and Katrina came home from the groomers with lion cuts. This is Katrina's first one. She was just starting to look so shaggy with her hair so long and unkempt so I decided on a lion cut for her too. Now they both look cute.

Oh how I love the pic of Simba's lion cut you've posted in the past (hint)!

I hope David and Paula are doing well and haven't grown up, finished college, gotten married, and gave you great-grandchildren since it has been so long since I've heard from you.

I'll see if Pam will take a picture of Simba and Katrina and upload it to the computer for me so that I can post it. Wouldn't you know, the last couple of days have been very cool here...dropping from a hot high 80s to the mid 60s. So now they both look so cold and Simba has even been sneezing. I'm sure that it'll get hot again very soon.

Pam, Archie, David and Paula just returned from Mexico the 23rd of June after spending 3 weeks there. Now the kids are so tanned. David is 17 years old, will be 18 in Jan., is working after school and during the summer vacation at Arby's. He's been there a couple of years now. He even bought himself a very nice Jimmy and runs me around a lot. His school grades have always been very good but seems to be slipping a little since he started working. He's about a B average. Paula, on the other hand, has a 3.87 average and never brings homework home. She says that she does it all in homeroom. She just turned 12.

Both David and Paula are taller than me. David is over 6' and Paula is taller than my 5'. My other grandson, Joshua, is very tall, as well. Over 6'. The only tall genes in our families is my great grandfather, the Johnston family. Must be where they are getting it.

Did your dad get one of those new houses built for the flood victims? How's he doing now? Does he have cats and did he lose any of his cats in the floods? That flood in Iowa was so freakish...something that a person wouldn't expect to happen here. My nephew who lives in Iowa City got flooded out of his apartment and was told that he had to vacate the premises. They wouldn't let him find his cat and thought that he had lost him forever. But when the waters went down, he returned to his apartment and his cat was still there, waiting for him and hungry. So sad for all who were affected by it.

The same goes for the tornadoes that we had last spring and summer. Sure, we have tornadoes in Iowa but never any like last year. Very freakish!

Oh, no kitty sneezes. My former boyfriend used to make fun of me when the cats sneezed as I went into "high alert". I almost lost both of them the first few days after I adopted them due to URIs from the SPCA. The vet and I really though Pookey would not make it. So, whenever there is a sneeze, we'd yell out, "Call in the medivac!" I still do with Pookey. He has always sneezed occasionally and had build up on one eye -- allergies...

I bet they had so much fun in Mexico! David is 17! He drives! I can't believe it! Does he have...gasp...a girlfriend? I can't believe Paula is 12. Where is the time going? I can believe they are both taller than you... I am 5'2" and the kids always tower over me!

My Dad and Step-Mom were able to stay in their house after some serious work. They lost the basement and had to gut it and did some major cleaning on the top level, but thankfully, most of their main living area was on the top level. It was more guest room, family room, freezers, storage, and laundry room in the basement they lost. They had a one year anniversary/rebuilding article in the Cedar Rapids Gazette last month and my step-mom was pictured receiving flowers. She's in Palo and they handed out flowers to all the residents that still live there. It is staggering how many have not returned. Don't quote me, but I think about 2/3 of the town is still abandoned.

They did have a cat, but she passed away about 7 or so years ago at the age of 16 from kidney failure. She was very loved and spoiled. My Mom said the SPCA rounded up many animals after the flood and temporarily housed them so folks could get on their feet. There were three or so displaced cats that hung around my parent's house that she fed and put out water for until folks claimed them.

I don't know what I'd do if they didn't let me get to Pookey to feed him. I would probably wind up arrested for breaking the law...

I can't recall, have you retired. I thought you were very close last time we spoke...

Hi Tammy....I'm working on my retirement now. It's best if you turn in for it three months in advance so that's what I did. My retirement date is set for October 1, 2009 but I'm just now wondering, do I not work that day or is that my last day? Guess I better check my records and see where I'm at. I'm getting excited thinking about it. Now it seems the time is going by too slowly.

I'm watching the final edition of "America's Got Talent" and hoping that this one has Susan Boyle on it.

Oh, I know this routine so well. I have no idea how they know stuff but they do. Personally, I have decided that they really CAN read the calendar, and may even have their own little tiny calendars and clocks.

Tessa, It wouldn't surprise me one bit if they did carry their own tiny little calendar or clock. They probably hold conferences too, telling each other which way each one of them should run when I try to round them up for something important. They're just like children. As a matter of fact, I catch myself talking to them, referring to them as 'you kids' all the time.

PHKitkat Jul 04, 2009 04:51 PM

Hi,

I have wondered about this very thing myself and this is what I have come up with.

I believe that our cats pick up on very subtle changes in our routines and the way we are acting and this puts them on alert. We may think that we are going about our normal routine, but perhaps cats can sense something different. Maybe we move around a little different, or we are a little anxious and they pick up on that. In the case of a flea product, they may be reacting to the sound of the package being opened, or even the smell of the product, especially if they have had the same stuff before.

Or maybe they actually read our minds........kind of a scary thought!

Hi KitKat....Good to talk to you again.

I think that you are probably right. Actually you said the same thing as Pam, my daughter. She said that she thought that I was giving off vibes when I picked up the cats, so they knew that something was up. It's funny though, that even when KatyKatt thought that something was amiss and hid under the bed, she wasn't going to take a chance on missing out on cat food and came running back in when she heard that can open. Need I mention that although she's the youngest, she is also the biggest?

I'm convinced that my two know what I'm thinking at times. Last night was their monthly dose of Revolution. Chessie took off away from me, forcing me to corner him in the bathroom in a corner to put his drops on him. Casey knew something was up, but he surprisingly held still for me, instead of his usual run around from room to room.

This morning was another example of their reading my mind. I've been having problems with both of them and my kitchen table. I put a table cover on it in May so that they could get on it and not scratch it up. Over the past couple weeks, they've been pulling the cover off the table and know that I'm not happy when I put it back on. This morning, everything was fine. They last got the cover off on Monday, leaving it alone the past couple days. However, I got around for work, and as I came down the stairs, Chessie came running out the kitchen and hid behind my stereo speakers. Casey came running up to me wanting attention and blocking my path. I looked into the kitchen, and the table cover was off again. They then sat in the living room side-by-side and watched as I put it back on.

Oh yeah, your cats act just like mine. They know when they've done something wrong and they all sort of hide, watching to see what I'll do. Silly kitty cats...all of them!
