My mom's bed is too high for me to jump on because I'm getting arthritis. So instead of jumping directly on the bed, I'll take the long route. First the TV stand because it's pretty low, then over to the cat tree, then onto the nightstand where, of course, I'm going to knock the phone off the hook because she doesn't need to talk on the phone anyway. Then onto my Mom's bed. That's been my route for the past year or so.

However, now the TV stand even looks too high to jump on anymore. Oh well, I'll try it anyway. Man, it sure is high. Can I even jump up that high? But I really want to lie on the bed. I always sleep all cuddled up to my mom. How am I going to jump on the TV stand so that I can go to the bed.

:::::Boing!!!::::: I just remembered. Walk, walk, walk, around to the other side of the bed! Step, step, step up the steps. Hey, now I'm on the bed. That was easy! Whew! There for a second, I thought that I was going to have to jump again.

Who am I?

Simba?

For a minute I thought it was Pookey. He has arthritis in his hip and only one hind leg -- but he doesn't need a step, he just meows and meows and meows until I lift him onto the bed, otherwise, he can jump up if he really wants to and I am not around.

GREAT news about your retirement, I knew it was soon... How exciting...

Yes, you both are right. It's Simba, who has arthritis and can't jump very high. My sister, Karen, felt so sorry for him trying to jump on my bed that she went home and got on Craig's List, looking for steps for Simba. She loves Simba and hated to see him trying to jump on my bed in his condition. So she was absolutely thrilled when she found the stairs. She threw the cover in the washer and then brought the stairs over to him and taught him how to climb them. After a couple of times practicing, he was great at climbing those steps. But sometimes forgets that he has them. It's so funny for both of us to watch him, when he looks at the TV stand, thinking about it being too high to jump up to, then to see the "Boing" look in his eye and then he goes around to the other side of the bed, to where the steps are. He just zips up those steps like they are nothing.

I've never seen the other cats use them; just Simba. They'll probably start using them when the TV stand becomes too high for them to jump up to.

Karen doesn't have any cats of her own. Her guinea pigs are her 'kitty cats'. She has the most spoiled guinea pigs that I've ever seen. When she was small, her pets were two ducks, Daffy and Donald, and a salamander. Then she got a puppy.
