My Devon Rex rarely plays

lubaveba Mar 10, 2010 12:15 AM

My Devon Rex boy is around 5 months old. He prefers to sit on your knee than play. I have a 6 month old Burmese who loves to play and often tries to wrestle the Devon. My Devon just sits there and never responds. Is there something wrong or do you think it is just his personality. Our last Devon was very inquisitive and playful. I feel sorry for my Burmese as she tries so hard to get the Devon to play. We bought him as company for our Burmese. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi There,

How long have you had the Devon? I'm wondering if he might have been taken away from his mom and littermates too young so that he was never properly socialized. Or if he was possibly raised without littermates, or raised in a cage without stimulation.

I think the best way to start getting this boy to play is by using interactive toys. Most cats will go for the laser toys and the fishing-pole type or toys on a wand are also popular. I would go to a pet store and look for toys that the 3 of you can play with together.

If you have had him for awhile and he has always been quiet, it's possible that he just has that kind of personality. I'm hoping that he has been examined by a vet since you got him, but if not, it would be a good idea.

Take care, and please keep us updated.

Regards,

Thankyou PHkitkat.I bought this cat from a breeder when he was 16 weeks old. He was well socialized having alot of other cats and kittens around him in the breeders home. My previous Devon was from the same breeder and he played normally. We have only had him 4 weeks so I think it is time I took him to the vet.
He eats like a horse but seems to be getting thin. I have now wormed him again (breeder wormed him at 12wks)just in case. He also insists on sitting on our laps doing the clawing suckling thing...very annoying. We try and gently remove him but he just gets back on our lap and continues.I think you may be right that he is a quiet kitten. It is a shame for the other cat. We had another Devon Rex kitten for 16 weeks. We recently had to euthanase him as he had Feline Peritonitis. I think our Burmese misses his company and we assumed this boy would be similar in temperament. Anyway, thankyou for your advise and I will try a little harder with our toys to get him to play.
