Drugging cat for grooming???

Moochie Dec 07, 2009 01:45 AM

In the net few weeks I will be taking my cat (Harley) to the vet for grooming services. He's gotten a little poop matty in places that I can't even get near without paying for it dearly.

Only concern I have is that he becomes The Incredible Hulk when I take him to the vet. It's always a very traumatic experience for him and he also becomes very hard to handle even for the vet staff. They have told me he's one of the strongest cats they have dealt with. He's also clipped the doc pretty good on a couple of occasions. 20 pounds of feline fury.

Does it sound like it's pretty much mandatory that he will be drugged for a thorough grooming? If so, is this a common practice? I'm not so wild about drugging him but if it will make it a much easier experience for him, I might be okay with it.

He's not a bad cat, he just gets a serious case of kitty roid rage whenever he sees the doc.

Thanks for any advice

Hi There,

It's pretty standard for a vet to sedate a cat for grooming. This is an advantage of having a vet do it, as the sedation makes the grooming process easier for the cat I would find out what type of sedation will be used ahead of time. You wouldn't want general anesthesia used unless it is absolutely necessary. Since Harley is a shorthair cat he won't be having a body clip, which would take longer and be more likely to require a general.

Harley is a very handsome boy, BTW!

Take care and please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Regards,
