Older FelV cat

crazyarabatx Feb 05, 2010 04:34 PM

I am contemplating bringing my grandmothers cat(Kelsie, 3 yrs old) into my household. When she was 6 months old she tested positive for FelV (on the snap test). She was the only cat in the household and was otherwise healthy so the lab test was not pursued. I am currently thinking of vaccinating my 8-month old cat(Dibs), then bringing Kelsie into my home. Kelsie is very healthy, so I don't know if she is a carrier or if she has beaten the virus or what. I have an appointment to have her re-tested. But I am curious, could she still be shedding the virus if she tests negative? If she tests positive, but is otherwise healthy otherwise, is she still a threat to Dibs? My grandmother can not care for her much longer and I need to think of re-homing options for her if I am not able to bring her into my home. Any suggestions?

Hi There,

I do not recommend bringing Kelsie into your home if she is still positive. Even if Dibs gets vaccinated she could still get the virus and it's just not worth the risk. The FeLV vaccine is far from being 100% effective.

However, if Kelsie tests negative, then there would be no danger to Dibs.

Please let us know what happens either way and if you have to find another option for Kelsie, we can give you some ideas.
