Help medicating a cat

MsPony Jan 08, 2010 08:03 PM

Hope this is in the right forum!

I just found out that my 17 yr old (18 in April) can pack quite a powerful punch.

I gave her Purrfect by dynamite this afternoon and she promptly threw up two hairballs, which she is a himlaysian/persian thing and I am bad about grooming, so understandable. I went and bought her Petromalt for temp relief as well as some canned science diet hairball food (same brand she gets, just hairball formula now.)

Man oh MAN, I had to swaddle her in a towel, stick her between my legs and hunch over her just to get a drop in. I still got clawed and bitten.

Any easier way? I just dump the purrfect straight into her mouth (powder), but the petromalt is a paste.

Hi There,

It would be easier to put these hairball "remedies" in some tasty food, but there is no guarantee that your cat will eat it. I wouldn't pour any powder straight into a cat's mouth......unless something is specifically formulated to be given that way, it isn't going to be helpful, and cannot be too pleasant for the cat besides.

I'm not big on anything that is supposed to prevent hairball formation anyway, other than regular grooming. In my multicat household, regular brushing is the only thing that has really helped.

Have you tried the hairball "treats" you can find in the treat section. You have to be careful, they aren't treats you can give at will -- follow the instructions like you would medicine. Generally you give several at once about every other day. These have worked well for me. (Just remember, don't put out a couple whenever you like as a "treat", follow the instructions on the package). The usually come in a pack that look like regular treats, but have "Hairball Remedy" or something like that written on them.
