Kitten food/adult food question.

Chatanuga Aug 12, 2010 11:36 AM

Over the past couple days, I've been looking at Maine Coon breeders to look into getting a new kitten when the time is right since I lost my Chessie last Saturday. While I was able to successfully move Casey in with Chessie and myself three years ago (three days after he moved in, they were eating together in the kitchen), I got to thinking about one small issue. How should I handle the adult and kitten food for the two of them when I decide to adopt a kitten. When I brought Casey home, it was easy since Chessie was still on kitten food. Casey's been on adult food for a long while now, and with his sensitive stomach, I don't want him getting into kitten food and making himself sick. At the same time, I don't want to have a kitten not able to access its kitten food outside of it's personal spot that I'll have set up for it.

Figured I'd get this sorted out before hand to help make things go as smoothly as possible.

I am so sorry about Chessie. The only way that you can do this is to put the food out for her several times a day where Casey can't steal it from her. Like in a closed room. Cats love kitten chow and he will certainly go for it given a chance. She can nibble on his food in between if she is really hungry.

That's what I was figuring I'd have to do. I knew it would be no problem putting kitten food for where the kitten would have it's place while it gets used to it's new home, but I wasn't sure if it would be alright for it to get into Casey's.

Thanks for the quick response!

I know some foods are rated for both. For example, blue bag original Cat Chow is rated for all stages of a cats life (if memory serves). You might want to check the AAFCO code on the bags to see what they are rated for and try to find a compromise amongst the food options.

When I brought Smokey home in September, I had the Cat Chow in the feeder in the kitchen for both him and Casey, and then I kept the Kitten Chow for in his kennel for when he was in there at night or when I was at work. He's been out now with Casey 24/7 since about mid-October and eating the Cat Chow exclusively since.
