Eighteen and Still Living At Home

cyclopsgrl Aug 21, 2009 03:25 PM

Pookey turned 18 today! It is a best guess as when I got Stanley and Pookey from the SPCA 17 years ago today, they and a vet that checked them out both told me they were "one year old".

He's napping now, saving up for the big event later (treats).

He's doing remarkably well. All his blood/urine numbers were pretty much in the "normal" range at his last vet checkup.

Very bright eyed, sassy, and playful for his age! His only problem of late is arthritis in his lower back due to losing his right rear leg when he was 12 (rabies shot induced cancer).

So, he has me very well trained. Meows and I lift him on the bed. He does it himself when I am not home, but when I am home, he sits and meows for me... Tried pet stairs very recently and he scoffed at them. Wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole...

Why use stairs when one can have their servant lift them on command?? He isn't stupid, you know. He worked very hard to train you and he can't let that go to waste. Happy Birthday, you sweet boy you.

WTG Pookey! I just love to hear about senior cats doing so well

And, yes, he certainly does have you very well trained!

Happy birthday Pookey! He has you very well trained. Why should he bother using the steps when you're there to help him?
I didn't realize that Pookey was 18. Glad to know that he's doing so well at that age. I guess that he won't be moving out on his own anytime soon. LOL Has it too good where he is.

Tammy, Pookey is older than my grandson, David. David will be 18 in January. He was born exactly one week after my 50th birthday.

Pookey is doing excellent for being such an old kitty cat. I'm happy that he's learned how to control you. He deserves all the pampering that he expects from you. Silly kitty cat!

We figure that Simba was born about April 1997. He's my oldest. Samantha is next at 11 year. Katrina and KatyKatt are both 10. Simba and Samantha show signs of arthritis and they both use the steps to get to their favorite sleeping bed...my bed! All of my cats sleep a lot now. It's usually a quiet house with 4 sleeping, FAT cats.

Happy Birthday, Pookey!

Pookey will enjoy hearing all the well wishes from you guys when he wakes from his 23.5 hour a day nap and I let him know!

He's actually still pretty active. He gets most of his sleep during the day while I work and is pretty annoyed on the days I am off -- he trys to nap and also keep an eye on me at the same time. What's a kitty to do?

The only bad thing about the aversion to the stairs and wanting my help is in the middle of the night. Somewhere between 3 and 5 AM, he jumps down to take care of some business. He then wakes me up to lift him back up. I tried the old "just wait him out, he will get tired"...nope. He meowed for 30 minutes solid one night. Made himself horse, got a drink of water, and came back and started meowing again. Now, I just get up, lift him up, and go back to sleep. What's that you say? Shut him out of the bedroom. Never. He positions his mouth just right in the door jam and can project his meow throughout the house and NEVER gets tired of meowing.

So, we do it his way and that way I sleep.
