Something New To Ask Your Vet About

cyclopsgrl Dec 31, 2009 11:41 AM

I took Pookey to the vet last night (18 yrs old, bloody nose); see post below if interested. From my experience, I want to share something new in medicine, per my vet.

They gave him a long lasting antibiotic shot for sinus infection before we treat for something more serious (tumor). It is about a year old on the market and called "Convenia". It is used in cats/dogs for many infections (Colds, Urinary Infections...) One injection lasts 14 days, no more pilling your pet twice a daily.

Something to ask your vet about. Mine has had really good luck with it. For reference, my vet charged by pet weight for it. $2 a pound (8 lbs = $16 for the shot). Even if it costs a little more in your area, imagine not having to pill twice a day for 14 days for a URI or UTI or other common infections they get thru their lives.

Oh, thanks for telling us about that. I will try and remember it for future use.

Even tho I was distraught with my kitty-boy and fully focused on him, I knew once I had my wits about me, I had to let you guys know. One shot that lasts 14 days. Will be a welcome relief to some with difficult pets to pill. URIs and UTIs are very common in cats... I treated my cats for two UTIs and about four URIs between them thru their life into their late teens. About six occurances I wished there had been a shot, LOL...

My dog Riley is easy to pill, she will take whatever I give her. I just put it on top of her food and it vanishes with the food. The cats are a different story, they tell me that they don't do pills and they mean it. Some are even almost impossible to even pry their little mouths full of teeth open

Goggies are so easy (sometimes). They just love food...

I have a friend that has an eldery cocker that needs pilled and she can't pill him directly (shove in mouth) because he get pretty mean with her about it. She puts the pill DEEP in cheese, treat, meat, etc., and he will wolf it down, gobbling like a dog does, swollow, and a few seconds later spit out a perfectly formed pill, LOL!!!

I have a friend who has a boxer pup who does not believe in taking pills either. He stole a food processer blade out of the dish washer and ran outside with it unknown by her spouse who was emptying the washer. He sliced his leg badly on it, even cutting a tendon and then ran all over the back yard yelping. Of course it got infected. So this young boxer, just under a year is supposed to be kept quiet and be on antibiotics. Young boxers don't do "quiet" and he doesn't do pills. She tried the cheese with the same result. Hot dogs too. Now she is putting the pills in a peanut butter sandwich with lots of peanut butter and that is working. He has to be kept quiet with no jumping or running for around 9 more weeks. The poor guy is most unhappy.

She'll be happy to hear about the new 14 day antibiotic shot that is available! I had a friend almost weep in relief when I told her last night, LOL. She usually loses an arm when pilling one of her cats -- it is very difficult.

I hope that Pookey does great on the antibiotic and needs no further treatment. He's doing good. He's a fighter and survivor. Also, it's good to know that I can get an antibiotic injection for my cats instead of trying to pill them.

How wonderful to do nothing and then rest afterwards. Meow!

So far so good, Pookey is doing well. Each day points more towards dry nose or something like that. No problems since last Wednesday afternoon.

Keeping my fingers crossed.
