Feeding fresh meat.....

gocatgo Jan 26, 2010 07:14 AM

The holistic vet on "Ask Dr. Tobin", on this forum recommends feeding cats a diet of fresh meat. "Cooked or raw chicken, with its bones, along with some cod liver oil and plain yogurt is probably the cheapest and easiest way to feed a cat.", he said. Now this is how I would like to feed my cats and I feel that it would be very healthy for them. However, I am squeemish about feeding raw so would definitely bake it first. I would probably fix them something like baked wing tips and necks, both of which have bones that I think that a cat could handle. I would definitely give them baked chicken breasts too, because I do know that they all love it.

A person would probably have to make a slow gradual transition from processed to homemade but I have the time to do this, now that I'm retired. It's always a treat for all four of them when share my chicken with them.

I would love to hear what you ladies think about this. Have you ever tried it or thought about feeding your cats a homemade diet?

Ruby -- I wonder if you would need to add any types of supplements to make sure you aren't missing something key they need. You'd have to have a balanced meal, whatever that is. It couldn't just be meat, I suspect. Does online have any "recipes" you can find?

I'm sure that supplements would need to be added as well, Tammy. I do have some very good holistic cat books that contain recipes but right now they are buried in the storage room in the basement. I'm going to go through that storage room this spring and sell, donate and toss a lot of junk from there. I will definitely keep the best of my books. So am just biding my time until that time but am sort of browsing on the net for some recipes in the meantime.

Hi There,

I have been seriously thinking of switching my cats to a homemade diet also. You never know exactly what you are getting in commercial foods, and they are so expensive, besides. I'd rather cook and know my babies are getting decent food.

A couple of years ago we had a special chat on feeding homemade diets to our pets. I will track down the transcript and try to post the link here. I am also squeamish about feeding raw, so that is out for my cats. The best way to feed homemade is to follow an actual recipe so it is sure to be balanced. I'll be sure to post anything I find here that will be helpful. Also, I believe that only raw bones are "safe" to feed pets, since cooked bones can splinter.

Take Care,
PHKitkat

PHKitkat, Yes, I would appreciate the transcript to the homemade diet that was posted on here a couple of years ago. I do remember it and am eager to try something new, so will surely be experimenting with different recipes. I do not believe that processed foods are really good for cats, same as processed foods are not really healthy for humans. And I think that dry is even worse than canned for cats and dogs. Simba, especially, was affected by the dry food, since he blocked twice and I almost lost him. Since taking all dry food away, and having them on canned exclusively, he no longer has the problem. His blockage was about 7 years ago so I know that this works.

Yes, thanks Abymom and Kitkat! I remember the live chat and am very happy to see it posted here once again. Since my house is getting major remodeling, I'm unable to really study it right now but will be reading and absorbing all of the info contained within, in a very short time.

My cats and I truly appreciate all of your help!
