nasal discharge

prisscot Jun 08, 2009 02:35 PM

my cat is 19 and having all sorts of issues. I've taken him to vet and bloodwork indicates his kidneys not up to par, due to age. He drinks lots of water, mainly in morning hours. He is eating real well but gaining no weight and has lost weight. He had a nasal discharge and vet gave Cefa Drops and while I thought it helped, the discharge is back and mainly from one nostril. The discharge is green and thick. His eyes are clear. He also developed some skin condition where his fur has thinned out and certain spots very crusty. Vet gave a shampoo for him and I've used it a few times, but condition persists. any suggestions on the nasal discharge. thank you.

If he is eating well but losing weight, this is most likely due to either hyperthyroidism or kidney failure. Has the vet checked his thyroid, and his urine for protein? If he has a lot of protein in his urine, feed him cheap hamburger, as he needs more protein to replace what he is losing, and fat for energy.
The nasal discharge is best treated with homeopathy, as it is probably a sinus infection which is hard to get at. If the discharge is stringy or ropy, kali bichromicum is indicated. If the cat is very mellow, try Pulsatilla. You might try Hydrastis if the other two have not helped.
