Dandruff in cats

solaandlunasmom Sep 12, 2009 09:26 AM

Hi there. My 14 year old cat recently developed dandruff. I haven't changed a thing with his diet and I live in CA and so the climate doesn't really change much either. He's a strictly indoor cat who eats an all-wet food diet of Wellness canned turkey (I've tried making his food, but he won't eat it). He has other issues - IBD and early kidney problems, but he's been on budesonide for his IBD and I give him glandulars and fluids for his kidneys (BUN went from 42 to 29 because of this!).

Anyway, just last night when I was brushing him I noticed dandruff. His stools are always quite dry also. Maybe I should add oil to his diet for the dandruff and dry stools? He's a very picky eater, so adding holistic remedies doesn't usually work with him.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Lisa

you might try adding some cod liver oil. If that doesn't help, have it checked out by a vet, as there is a parasite known as walking dandruff that affects cats. Is he grooming well?

Unfortunately my cat has IBD and can only have chicken products, so I can't give him cod liver oil. Any other types of oils that might work?

He goes to the vet every few months for bloodwork because he's also in beginning stages of CRF, so I didn't want to take him in and stress him out just for dandruff.

He seems to groom himself okay, but he is 14 pounds and the dandruff is mostly down his spine, so maybe he just isn't grooming well there?

It is possible that he cannot reach the area. Is he eating dry food, or only fresh or fresh-cooked chicken?
