male cats with worms???

mingdurga Nov 02, 2009 08:04 AM

I suspect my 7 yr. male cat to have worms (long, white, over 2" but see nothing in the stools. This morning he was bleeding from one nostril. I found a bunch of worms this morning mixed in with some white fluids, but didn't see which cat did it. I suspect this male because of the nose bleed. Can a vet do something without a stool sample?

We almost never find roundworms in the stool. only the eggs. When we see roundworms, it is in the vomit, which is most likely the clear fluid you found. It would be best to have a fecal exam done for all your cats, as this can cause problems for people, but if you are unable to do that, treat all the cats with Pyrantel Pamoate (Strongid) which is very safe and very effective for treating roundworms.

Yes, this one cat was seen by a vet yesterday and given a dose of stongid, plus one more in 2 weeks. All my cats will have stool tests by this weeks end. Initially the stray female rescue and her kittens were treated for worms / parasites. Figured the worms were history, but looks like the war will be ongoing.
