cat with broken femur, rear leg

mingdurga Nov 28, 2009 04:28 PM

My 4 month old kitty broke the big femur bone on oct 17th, and it's not healing right in my opinion. Dr. did surgery, placed a pin with wires to hold things together. It was a clean break. Limiting her activity is hard, and subsequent x-rays showed the pin moved up slightly (but not enought to cause a problem), some new bone growth in surrounding area, and a small infection.
Been using clavamox liquid 2x daily w/meals for 7 days; mix a new batch and repeat till 3 bottles used up. Going back to vet Dec.7 for more x-ray followup. How long does a break of this kind take to heal, where cat is "normal" again?

The break is on rear right side.

Thanks.

Mike

A bone must be stabilized to heal, which means that it musst not move at the break. If it is still moving even with the pin. it should be put in a splint or brace. Giving homeopathic symphytum or calc phos aids the healing. Anti-inflammatories often delay bone healing, so if the vet gave an NSAID for pain, stop it and ask him for Tramadol instead.
