Metallic smell to urine

quill Feb 13, 2010 09:44 AM

Hi,

What would cause a sudden metallic smell to the urine of
an elderly neutered cat who is is otherwise good health after
recovering from a light repiratory infection for which he was on antibiotics(Amoxicillin) for awhile.

I have been feeding him raw pureed beef or
chicken with a little unflavoured yogurt and raw grated parnips and canned pumpkin added. As well, for kidney/liver support I'm giving daily Vitamin C(500mg), Vitamin B6(50mg), and milk thistle(100mg). I've been feeding this for a couple of weeks with no problem, now there's a metallic smell to the urine which
is almost clear. There is normal consumption of water through the day and a normal number of times he urinates-it's not excessive. Is one of the above causing the metallic smell? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Iodine sometimes produces a metallic smell. I wasn't able to find the symptom anywhere, but you might try homeopathic Strontium carbonate. I would also suggest leaving out the parsnips, as I can't see them as having a benefit, and might be the cause of the smell.

Just wanted to add that you mentioned iodine as leaving a metallic odor. I had been dabbing a sore at the back of the neck with a little iodine. It was in an area where it wouldn't be licked off but I think he scratched it, got it on his paws and licked if off. Once I stopped the iodine, the smell disappeared from the urine. So, thank you, for your help im narrowing down what was causing the metallic smell.
