Hello Dr. Tobin,

My cat, Ashley, was diagnosed with severe IBD by intestinal biopsies. She is on a grain-free diet, getting Flortiflora twice daily, and has been on pred BID for a week. She still has runny stools several times daily. Are there any holistic treatments that you are aware of for IBD in cats? Would a different probiotic possibly be more effective?

Thanks for your time,

AshleyElla

IBD is something of a catch-all phrase; it says nothing of the cause. If, in addition to the loose stool, your cat has gas, stomach rumbling, and very smelly stool, the cause may be small bowel bacterial overgrowth. You could try probiotics at each meal. If you have been using Fortiflora for some time without improvement, switch to another type. You may first need to give Tylan at each meal for 3-4 days before using the probiotic. I would also stop all commercial cat food and feed only cooked chicken until this is corrected. Once the stool is normal again, we can modify the diet for longterm use. But do not feed dry food under any circumstances.
