Cat with swollen red area around butt

angeka May 30, 2010 05:24 PM

we have an outdoor cat who has recently lost a lot of weight and upon further inspection her entire butt is swollen and red around her anus. It's not round swelling, like hemorrhoids, but a swelling of the entire area. She doesn't seem to be in pain. Is eating (wet food) and assuming drinking water that is available. A few months ago she was treated for a UTI. She also has no tail (was removed several years ago) which probably has nothing to do with this other than that the area is very exposed and this incident made her less social so I don't know how long this has been swollen since she doesn't hang out long or often. What to do?

Since it is uniformly red and swollen, it is likely irritated and inflamed, possibly due to diarrhea. You said that she is an outdoor cat, so I don't expect that you can collect a fecal sample, which would be advisable, if at all possible. Are there any signs of loose stool, such as stool smeared around the rectum, or on the fur near the rectum? You might try one of the following homeopathic remedies in the 30c potency twice a day: Apis is indicated for swelling with a pink coloration, or Sulphur, for redness around body orifices. If her coat gets matted and she looks scruffy, or if she is a yellow cat, I would try Sulphur first.
