I have been told not to wash my cat's dishes with soap as it is a chemical and not only not good for them but they do not like the taste.

I WAS washing with a free and clear soap.

I have been told to pour boiling water over the dishes and when they cool scrub with a cloth as it is the scrubbing and hot water and not soap that gets rid of germs.

I am just not sure of this.

What do you recommend?

Boiling water will not necessarily get rid of all the grease, which may then form a film that will support bacteria. It is better to wash the bowl with warm water and soap, making sure the bowl is well rinsed afterwards. Glass, ceramic and metal bowls will rinse out easily. Plastic may hold the soap or fat, and is not good to use in any case.
