Hugo/5yrNeuteredMaleSiamese:UTI crystals

rhea-says Feb 03, 2011 12:59 PM

Recently adopted (along w/his daughter) from Siamese Rescue org. No previous history of UTI. Brought him home 1/8/11. AM of 1/14/11 observed him making frequent trips to litterpan, long stay, tiny "spray" of urine "pebbles" rather than nice, healthy clump-o-urine each time. Took to vet w/in a few hours. 1st week was prescribed prednisolone, prozasin, Hills CD canned and dry. Seemed to be improving w/small, actual balls of urine (maybe 50cent coin diameter), but on 1/26, back to tiny spray pebbles so veterinarian added 14day prescription of baytril.

I am not a fan of the ingredient list for Hills CD & I want to safely eliminate the Hills CD from his diet asap.

Came across your 3/7/2006 post: "RE: UTI in male cat - PHDrTobin", where you advised only wet food w/equal parts water, cranberry concentrate softgel 2x/daily, 1tsp ascorbic acid over course of the day in food, increasing amounts of salt in food up to limit of what cat will tolerate.

2 questions: (1) Would you still advise this regimen? (2) How much salt is too much?

Thank you, in advance, for your much appreciated info. Still immensely greatful for your previous advice of 1m ledum palustre 3x/daily for 3days, which cured my beloved k9, Roly (2/11/93-8/16/2008), of Lymes disease. Plus much more intelligence which has kept my crew in good shape.

Purchased Natures Bounty "Triple Strength Cranberry": 140mg Cranberry Concentrated Powder Blend (includes: 100mg ascorbic acid, 3 IU Vit E). 50:1 concentrate = 2000mg fresh cranberries.

Question: does this contain enough Vit C to = 1tsp Vit C if I administer 2 softgels daily? Or, should I still supplement an additional 1tsp of Vit C daily?

This protocol still works, but what I have been using lately is d-mannose, 1/8 tsp in the food at each meal to deal with the bacteria, stopping all dry food, and adding salt and water to the cat's food to dilute the urine. The bacteria is gone in 2 days, and the water, and the increase in water consumption through excess salt intake, dissolves the crystals.

Saw the d-mannose included in one of the liquid cranberry concentrate products, specified for urinary health support, but wasn't sure it was cat-safe, 'til now. Already started w/cranberry concentrate. Hugo is a master of pill-avoidance & squeezing the contents out of the softgels is messier than I imagined. So, I'm soaking them in water for a few hours & they smush right up. The flavor doesn't seem to phase him @ all. Thought it rather pleasantly tart, myself! Will p/u d-mannose, shortly. Implementing your protocol. On behalf of Hugo (& myself) -Thank you! Thank you!
