Hair Ball treatment

juliannesmom Jun 02, 2011 08:13 AM

My cat throws up hairballs. It's not a simple coughed up hairball. It's usually combined with food and it's a mess and a big production. I brush her, but not excessively. She does not get matted. Should I be treating her with something so the hair she swallows passes through her system (if so, what kind of treatment?) or let her continue to for balls in her stomach which she eventually throws up? Thanks for your help.

Adding wheat bran or psyllium husks to your cat's wet food helps move the hair out of the stomach and through the intestines. If the hairballs are too large, add digestive enzymes or meat tenderizer to the food, which will dissolve the mucousy material which glues the hair together, so as to allow the hair to pass through little by little.
