Well, I am a new member who recently lost her 15-year-old gray and white short haired male cat. I had had him since he was three months old and he was just turning feral when I got him. He had a very long, happy life - loved "his people" and hated the outdoors. (there's a story behind that)
He loved his food, family and napping. He was an only cat and proud to be so. (Another funny story) He will be sorely missed but I know that he was happy and not in pain when he passed.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Smokey was what I call a soul-mate cat, a special one that comes along once in awhile and touches our hearts like no other.
You were very fortunate to have had so much time together. I have some cats that were born feral and when they come around it's a very special gift.
