I have a 2 year old cat that has stopped using the cat box over the last few months. Cat box is clean twice daily. So that doesn't appear to be an issue. I have read tons of articles and believe the problem has to do with her hips. She was significantly delayed in developing and has always had a narrow pelvis. She is on medication to help her pass stools more easily and 2 vets didn't believe that there was a significant issue wither her hips, though sometimes she does limp. I have thought about using a tray where she urinates with litter in it, but wanted to know what other ideas people might have or things that have worked for them.

A shallow tray may help. But if her hips hurt, the act of squatting to urinate might also be uncomfortable for her. You might ask the vets or techs to show you some strengthening exercises to do with her to help with her hips. But if it is pain that is causing the problem, then some meds might also help.
