Update! Hi board!

Kittyluvr2 Oct 18, 2012 11:06 PM

Well, been a very long time, and I will try to keep my update from putting you to sleep. I kinda left this board after years of being a 'regular' here. It would be great to see others pop in and get updates as well. How are all of you?

We'll start with me.....my name is Rose. I would guess it has been (possibly) 10yrs since I posted here. I am a huge animal lover and cats are pretty much my life. They are truly my best friends. That sounds pretty pathetic, as it means I do not have any human friends worthy of such an honor. Sad but always true.

I have 4 kitties. Had many more since I last posted, and I guess an update on how I went from 8 (or was it 9) to 4 is in order.

I lost 3 out of a 4 sibling bunch at too young an age. They came from a feral mom and dad, so I never knew what their gene-pool would be. Sadly, it appeared cancer was in order. Plus I was STUPID....VERY stupid, and I smoked...which IMO, inevitably shortened their lives. I am no longer a smoker, so I hope the 4 remaining have a long time with me. The 3 I lost were named Trixie, Pippa and Tiffany. This year I lost Maggie....a sudden loss, and I admit I am in the dark as to what could have been wrong with her. She just appeared very sick one day, and took to hiding. I knew it was near the end, but did not know why. Finances prevented me from being able to do more than bloodwork (which appeared ok), and I had to say goodbye to her quite suddenly. That really hurt. The vet agreed that whatever it was, it had her running a very high fever and the fact that she was hiding meant she was on her way. Not knowing why is soooo hard. To say I was crying would be putting it mildly. My mom wouldn't let me go to the vet by myself...no driving, etc. Of course I still cry to this day. It was just really hard not knowing why. I really felt like the worst mom ever. To put your kit to sleep instead of seeing if there is anything you can do for it is horribly, horribly wrong! I will carry the burden of guilt with all 4 of my babies, as I am to blame for their early trips to the bridge. I love them and will miss them always, and still cry for them on bad days. I'm very sorry Trixie, Pippa, Tiffany and Maggie. So very sorry.

Now, onto the 4 I still have. Kissie and Mimi just turned 10 this week! I had gotten them from the local shelter the day after losing 9 pets in a house fire on Dec 4, 2002. (at 9:15am...sigh...I am still unable to put that day behind me) I still have Scooter, the last of the 4 in the litter we found under the dumpster during rebuilding the house. He is brother to his sis's, the 3 I lost. Plus I have Simon, who was found IN (I suppose) my bosses car, under the hood, after hiding there, while my boss drove home one day. A 7 mile drive, a stop for gas, and 70mph....and Simon survived it. He did cry all the way, and my boss thought he just kept hearing a kitten crying, and looked around, but there was no kitten. Little booger was hanging on, under the hood. My boss knew I was a cat lover, and he knew of my losses from the fire, so he sorta played on that, knowing full well I was going to take him in. Why not, I already had 8 kittens, what's one more? I have to truly believe that these 9 kitties were destined for a terrible life, and it was God's reasoning to take my 9 pets, so I could help the lives of these 8.

So, let me tell ya a bit about each...
Mimi was, and still is, top cat around here. She is also top cat to the humans as well. She is incredibly high maintenance, as per her insistance, as she does not shut up, period. And her tone can be pretty harsh, or pathetic, depending on what she expects of us. We found this quality in her at a very young age, and new to us, hense the name Mimi...as it was all about her.

Kissie is hysterical. She is sister to my Maggie, and adopted from the shelter the day after the fire, along with Mimi. This kitty, from day one, has issues. She makes us LOL every single day. And I do mean, EVERY SINGLE DAY, and far more than once. As far as we are concerned, she hears.....'voices'. Since kittenhood, she has always been hearing, 'the voices', and they drive her crazy. She just goes flippy out of the blue, looking up and runs like a crazy cat. She is toooo funny. Plus she has a permanent smile on her face, so she is adorable as well. She is just so....stupid. LOL Anyone who has ever had a stupid pet knows that they are so dear to you. Since she just turned 10 this week, not a one of us were going to tell her that. She is 10, but she is still a KITTEN. Who wouldn't love that? She looks like a kitten and behaves like a kitten. She is perfect.

Simon...sigh, Simon, Simon, Simon. He is (and always has been, since being neutered at 4 months old) a grouchy old man..or a loving sweetheart. He talks, he talks a lot! His has a huge vocabulary. Mimi hates him, as he is a grouch to her. Scooter and Simon have this manly bond thing going on. "The Boys" of the house. He is happiest when cuddling on my chest while I watch tv. Worst thing is that he is a drooler when he feels the love. It totally grosses me out! Sorry, but drool is gross, and no cat should drool! So I am like the mother who keeps a kleenex around and wipes his face, and like a child, he gets cranky about it. Simon IS a cranky kitty. But so loving as well. Bipolar? Maybe, but it's ok....it's Simon, and he had a tough start in life, traveling such a long way under the hood of a car. He is allowed to be cranky.

Scooter....the only boykit in that litter of 4 that were found under the dumpster during rebuilding the house. He is a BIG BOY! He is, and always has been, the laziest kitty I have ever seen. Se have joked about his sleeping 23 hours a day as far back as I can remember. Due to this, he is 21 lbs of solid male cat. I know he should be on a diet, for his own health, but trying to feed him less would not be nearly enough...his problem is mostly lack of exercise. His fav toy is a laser beam, but he is even lazy with that. I must bring the laser TO HIM, as he will not go after it. I have come to accept him for who he is, and although he is huge, hid doc appts do show him to be healthy, so if I am making a mistake and not ordering him to lose the weight, I look at it as quality of life vs quantity (of how long of that life). He eats a total of 1 cup of food (dry food) a day, so I know he is not overfed.

My mom has brought a chihuaha into the house, so we have Sissie. She is 9 yrs old and has certain relationships with each cat...good and bad. But the cats sure keep her young, which is great.

Me.....I live on Long Island and I have been out of work and on permanent disability for over 3 yrs now. Damaged nerves in my back and fibromyalgia have made it impossible for me to continue working at was what a very physically demanding job. Luckily I was approved for disabilty, and I was even approved to collect my pension early, due to disability. My parents live with me, as I will be their caregiver as they need it...which right now they do not need. But my owning a home is what kept them financially able to have a roof over their heads. I am glad they are comfy in their older years. That is how it should be.

I am getting really tired from typing all this, sigh. Sorry so longwinded, and anyone who may have actually read all this, kudo's to you and thanks for listening.

In the meantime, I hope anyone out there who is actually listening, will join in and tell me all about yourself, and you furkids. Pics will come soon...I just have to upload them and see what I remember. Sorry if there are any typo's, but I just don't feel like looking for any.

Take care everyone. G'night.
Rose

I can't wait to see photos of Kissie and Mimi -- I can't believe they are 10! I remember the kitten photos...

I am going back to school for my Bachelor's degree at age 46. I have a couple years left. It sure is eating up a lot of my free time. All of my weekends. But, it keeps me out of the pool hall.

Please post pictures soon!

Rose, We remember you and are glad to hear from you again. Can't believe that much time has passed. I remember when you lost everything in the fire and the tragedy and trauma but you overcame so much! None of the original calicos are around. Catiya from eventual kidney failure, Octavia from brain cancer (almost killed me when lost her), and Jeopardy to sudden heart (we assume). Now have Medley a calimeezer (Siamese with a little calico thrown in just to make interesting) who came several years ago so knew the first three. Added a Manx from a hoarder a year ago and that's been a fiasco. Have to keep the house divided since she attacks Medley at any chance. So, we basically have a daytime and a nighttime cat. Not a good deal at all but haven't figured out a solution and time hasn't helped.
That's the short version. Humans are fat and sassy as always.
It's good to know how you are and you're wonderful for providing a place for your folks!

Hi Rose, good to see you again. Wow, it has been a long time. Glad you're doing pretty well...so many changes, This board has gotten very quiet, so come on over to the Meeting Hall board where the kitties take charge, that's where everyone is...

Well I have pics, may not be really recent, but they are of adult size.

Not sure if I can write like a kitty on the Meow board, but my kitties sure have things to say, so I will give it a shot. I'll lurk for a while to get the idea. I see a gigantic thread that looks like a murder mystery going on (just from a quick glance). Hmmm...

Thanks for the invite. We'll all pop over and get to know the kits there and they'll let me know when they feel comfy and want to borrow my puter.

Right now Mimi thinks it is silly, but Mimi needs a sense of humor. That's her top kittytude for ya. Kissie loves it, but can't type. Scooter just kinda yawned when I mentioned it and Simon is kinda shy and not sure, so he is hiding behind his fear of making friends.

Pics are of Kissie....very festive. Then we have Mimi, the one with no sense of humor, and last is Scooter and Simon...both belonging to the Boys Club. They are all between 9-10yrs old, and happily healthy.

What cuties! I've been a steady member of the boards in their various iterations since 1998 and didn't start Meow Chat until last December when I adopted Sparkle. She is quiet the talker, more so than her dearly departed brothers. It becomes fun quickly!

Cutiekits! And very lucky to have you for their mom.
Not to worry about "speaking" meow, it comes pretty quickly
and several of us lapse into "human" on occasion. At times the kits evey turn the "pawboards" over to humans to write.
As far as which of your cats is spokeskit, the one with the most to say can always use you as typist! It will be fun and I think
you'll enjoy it. See you in MCV! K

I posted, but I think it went out to sea.....

We are in the path of The Perfect Storm ;-P.......so I will probably see ya all well after the storm hits (?), as who knows if I will have power and when we will get it back.

Anyone in its path on the east coast, best of luck and keep your furkids close. Luckily last year I stocked up on carriers and have enough of all furkids. I don't see myself going anywhere, but I like knowing the babes have 'their own rooms', if it makes them feel safer than under the beds.

If this storm hits like they say, I will admit...I am scared. And I LOVE a good tough storm! But the media is scaring the bejeezus out of me. I have never been in a storm of this magnitude. Sigh.

Ok, I am done with my pity party freak out. Take care to all and good luck. See ya on the fly-by!

Kittyluvr2 Oct 27, 2012 08:46 PM

***typo

stocked up on carriers and have enough for all furkids

....as opposed 'to have enough of all furkids'

as nobody can ever have enough of all furkids. I know I want more and more furkids. I can never have enough. I just can't afford more at the moment.

I will shut up now. Nervous energy. Time to play a game and get out of my head.

Take care all. Be safe.

I am in the path, as well, in Northern Maryland. I am kind of in the Baltimore and D.C. areas on the maps. Praying it isn't as bad as they think. It sounds like many of us will be without electricity...

We all (Long Island) got messages from our electric company telling us to expect it to take 7-10 days for power to be restored...assuming of course that we will lose power. We are on the windy side of the storm, giving us hurricane winds for like 24-36 hours straight. That is pretty scary. We were told to evacuate in my area...MANDATORY, but we are staying. I can't stay in a shelter on a teenie cot for 2 days, no way. Most people are staying. Expecting the storm to hit hard by Monday morning and stay hard til late Tuesday morning. Right now we are gusting around 60mph. My stupid neighbor didn't even clear away his stuff...so I expect it will fly into my house...TYVM. (broken windows?) Now he is gone. @@ Idiot.

Good luck to you Tammy, and everyone else in its path. They said that even Lake Michigan is going to be affected by this! Crazy!! This has NEVER happened before....never. We are part of history here. Kind of amazing.

Sit tight and hang on.

Kittyluvr2 Oct 28, 2012 08:37 PM

Oh, and one more thing that really made me go "You have got to be kidding me!"....
A Norwegian (sp?) Cruise left NYC harbor at about 7pm for a cruise to Bermuda! WHAT!!!??? There was a guy from TWC at the NY harbor and he saw the ship leave! They are going to cruise right though the storm, with waves like 25 ft high! What on earth are they drinking on that cruise!? I guarantee that they have a ship full of very sea sick people.
The idiots just come out of the woodwork during storms.

I am not really on the shore of the island, so I am not really concerned with storm surge, which is the biggest worry. But I am in a mobile home community, hense the evacuation. They came around telling us we had to leave. Of course they can't force you, so we stay. I am not in a trailer/mobile home. I am in the park, but I have a regular house....well, a modular home. Basically like a regular house. And they house is fairly new, and hurricane strapped down. Good strong windows and roof etc...BUT, the park is filled with 30yr old trailers and I am sure they will be falling apart and blowing in the wind during the lengthy stay of the winds, which is why we were told to leave. I can only hope nothing takes exact aim at my windows or sky lights, as that is when we will have trouble. Other than that, we have tons of food, water, ice and we even have propane to cook with. Mom and I will play 5,000 Rummy (instead of the typical 500, LOL) and Scrabble and stuff. I have lots of books I have been reading, so I will have plenty to do...yet I am sure the novelty will wear off quickly.

Ok...shutting up now. That nervous energy kicking in again. Sorry.
Take care all.

Well, it is 8:30pm and all went well. So far, we still have power. Blinking a lot, but still on. The worst is pretty much over. The storm picked up some juicy speed earlier in the day, which kinda changed the way we were hit. Simple hurricane winds, nothing damaging...and it is losing steam hour by hour. Gusts probably hitting 60mph, not bad at all. We may have clocked a gust upwards of 80mph? We'll know more tomorrow on the details, as I am up the block from a major airport and they use that as a guide for wind speeds...I do not think we got hit bad at all.

I did hear some pretty bad things were happening in Delaware and Jersey...so I am guessing you may have been hit hard Tammy?

cyclopsgrl Oct 30, 2012 03:14 PM

I lucked out. Many in this area are without power. My landline (phone) service is down, but thankful that is all.

Hi Rose! It's great to hear from you again and know you are doing okay. I think about you from time to time and always wondered how you were doing. It has a LONG time!
Congrats on quitting smoking. That's a tough one, but know it can definitely affect those around you so I am glad you quit.
I'm sorry to hear that Trixie, Pippa and Tiffany are no longer with you. Those names sound familiar. Aren't they the ones you took with you when you moved further east? I'm sorry about Maggie too. Sometimes they have underlying conditions that are just not apparent until it's too late. All you can do is give them a good life filled with lots of love until it is their time to leave you. And I know they got that from you. Very glad to hear that Kissie and Mimi are still doing well though. I remember when I met them! And Scooter too. Not sure if Simon was there at the time. I remember you had 7 kittens and had just had the mom spayed and released when I was over. That sure was a lucky thing that he was able to survive that ride under the hood! Didn't your mom have some dogs too...seem to remember Poms or some small dogs like that...that made the move out east with you? Glad to hear your parents are still well though.
How did you all make out during Hurricane Sandy? I hope no damage and that power was restored quickly.

Sorry it took me so long to welcome you back here. My life has been busy with work (still driving that bus!) and TNR. I am down to 5 cats from my 9. Munchkin died in '09 from a vaccine sarcoma, then I lost Maddie to probable lymphoma and Meadow to pancreatitis/liver problems caused by her diabetes and then my sweet soul mate Casey to kidney failure. It's a daily struggle to get over these losses and tears are shed almost daily for them, but helping the feral cats out there does help keep my mind occupied. Still have my oldest girl, Mushka...she turned 19 the beginning of August and has moderate CRF but is doing pretty well. Then there are Ashley & Nicky, the former feral tabby twins, Harley the tux and Riley my loveable SOBOL. And that's it in a nutshell. Not much has changed in my life...the cats are it.
Glad to hear from you again, Rose. Take care and don't be a stranger!

Hi PHCatnip! I often thought of you as well. I was pretty sure you were the one who had come to my house and met my kits...and I had gone to meet yours as well. I was unsure about having too many kits and you introduced me to all of yours and I saw "that ain't bad at all!"....having that many kits. LOL You did meet the four babies we had found under the dumpster and of course we would keep them all. As a matter of fact, I recall you meeting them and you fell in love with Tiffany...the little white cotton ball. We were going to keep Trixie and Scooter, but you made me realize that keeping them all was A-OK. We were having our house rebuilt after the fire and we moved back in about 11 months later, having never moved east. (guess you may have me confused with someone else on that story, lol) You also let me borrow your havahart (sp?) to trap the ferals and get them spayed/neutered/released, which I did do so successfully...stopping the insanity. But luck had it that we did get a litter of 4 out of one of the ferals before we got her spayed, and that would be Tiffany, Trixie, Pippa (the 3 who passed way too early) and Scooter...the only boykit in the litter, who we still have. I am going to post two picc here...one of the litter the day we found them and were scratching our heads on what to do, what to do..........and then a pic of your fav little white cotton ball that you may remember. You coaxed me into keeping her...which I did want to keep, but my parents who lived with me were feeling overwhelmed keeping all 4 of them, while we also had 3 adopted kitties the day after the fire. Maybe you'll remember Tiffany...who turned out to be a terrific loving kitty, quite high maintenance in that dept as well. I miss her soooooooo much.

Kittyluvr2 Nov 03, 2012 06:51 PM

oooooh.....sorry the pics are so small!

PHCatnip Nov 03, 2012 10:16 PM

Oh yes, that's the sweet little face I remember! I think I just have my timing mixed up. These were the ones I met when you guys were still in the temp trailor while the house was being rebuilt, right? I remember seeing the rebuilt house and then we lost touch and next time we corresponded, you had said you moved out to the mobile home park. Just a bit fuzzy on the timeline of when you got all the cats, but I do remember the names you had given them all and of course that sweet little furball.

Yes, the move to the mobile home was a bummer, but the taxes were out of control in the house I lived in and I was the sole financial provider and tired of being so broke, so.....

Hope you aren't dealing with lengthy power outages, heaven forbid......need gas! I have 1/4 tank of gas and making a point to not drive anywhere. Hoping this lunacy ends soon.

PHCatnip Nov 06, 2012 06:00 AM

I hear you about the taxes. It's totally insane what we pay. No end in sight either. Just raises everysingle year.
Power is on but the gas situation id dicey. Very worried about some of my friends still without power and this darn Nor'Easter coming tomorrow.

Sheesh...now we have joined in with NJ and are pumping gas (if you can find it) on odd and even numbers. I see only one station nearby and the line is a mile long, and all I have is like 1/8th of a tank. I can't stand for over an hour with a 5-10 gallon can, and I will run out of gas just waiting my turn. I have decided that driving is highly overrated and I am just not going anywhere for the next several weeks. Sigh......several weeks!

Luckily the noreaster wasn't that bad. We got a couple of inches of snow and I didn't hear a lot about new power outages...but that doesn't mean there weren't any. If this is any clue as to what the winter will be like, I think I may visit a friend in Florida. Problem is, I despise the heat!

Hope everyone is getting on ok.

PHCatnip Nov 10, 2012 08:38 PM

The gas lines I saw today weren't that bad. I tink the odd/even thing will help keep things under control until all the depots are back up and running. I just can't believe how long it is taking to get the power back on in some places.

We definitely got lucky with that nor-easter. Got more snow than expected out my way. I am NOT a fan of snow and really dread the upcoming winter months. I hate cold, I hate heat and humidity. I'm not so easy to please.

I am torn between winter and summer. I hate the humidity of summer, therefore I can't wait for winter...and I hate the winter and can't wait for the heat of summer. I cannot be made happy. I think that is why we were given spring and autumn, just to shut us up. I do know the kitties prefer winter, as to them, they just figure that a little extra cudding takes care of the cold, and while it is too hot in the summer, they can just tell us to "Have a nice day" and look out for themselves, "see ya in the winter".

cyclopsgrl Nov 11, 2012 08:44 PM

I visited my parents in Arizona (they moved there from Iowa earlier this year) and there is something to say about the dry heat. I do love my four seasons (here in Maryland) and probably wouldn't like Arizona full-time, but 80 degrees was very pleasant there and 100 degrees did not feel nearly as hot as it should (in states with humidity)...

I have always figured I would end up following my brother, wherever he ends up once retired, but he wants to stay on the coast, more southern. The thought of spending the rest of my life in heat and humidity just doesn't work for me. Oddly, I would miss the winter. Not a fan of the cold, but I would hate to never see snow again, as I find it pretty to look at, and very comforting. So, hating the heat, enjoying the sound of a stormy blizzard (and paying someone to shovel of course), I have finally set my eyes on Pennsylvania...sorta northwestern. (4 seasons) As long as I plan and shop beforehand, I have no problem being snowed in for a week...there is something very soothing about it. I know I would still get the heat and humidity, but I cannot give up snow...I would miss it too much. I could get the 4 seasons where I live now, but the expense of Long Island is ridiculous and I have better things to waste my money on. (like paying the guy to shovel my driveway)

I am from th midwest originally (Iowa) and they have four seasons with lots of snow. It is in my blood to have snow as well. I've settled in Northern Maryland, just along the Pennsylvania border. I love it here and not quite as harsh of winters as the midwest. Recommend you head to southern Pennsylvania vs. northern Pennsylvania, as you will have snow anywhere you go in the state, but not as severe the more south you go...

Lots of "old"timers here...and new ones as well. I don't remember what name I used to post under, but Sam the Monster Cat from H*ll was my reason for joining.

My 18 yr old boy passed on a few weeks ago and I knew folks here might wish to know so I found the boards again and re-registered.

It's so good to see so many familiar "faces."

I remember Sam well and am saddened by your loss. I posted over in Meow Chat (both my boys from all the old-time posts are now gone and I have a girl cat named Sparkle), but I wanted to respond here, as well. This board is not frequented often anymore.
