Cat pulled out 3 claws

rowantree Dec 30, 2012 02:17 AM

Our orange tabby, who is a little more than a year old, took it upon herself to pull out 2 claws on one back paw and 1 claw on her other back paw. I have been spraying her paws to prevent infection and am using a recycled newspaper litter instead of clay. I check her back paws a few times a day for signs of infection and so far she seems to be doing well. My big concern at the moment is that since this has occurred, she has decided that she no longer cares for our black tabby, who is around the same age. She growls, hisses and spits at our black tabby. During the day, they're fine, it's only at bedtime when the aggressive behavior comes out. I feel terrible for our black tabby, she's smaller than our orange kitty & shy as it is. I'm hoping that once our orange tabby's paws are completely healed that maybe she'll feel better towards the other cat. Anyone ever experience this with their cats?

Hi There,

This sounds more like your cat has experienced some kind of trauma than anything else. A cat would not actually pull out it's own claws, although if claws become stuck in something, like a screen, part of a claw can break off. Sometimes cats that get hit by cars have severely frayed nails because they tend to stretch out their claws on impact.
I think your injured cat is blaming the other cat for the injury, which may or may not be true. Perhaps the cats were near each other when the injury occured.
I know you are keeping a close eye on your injured baby, so infection is unlikely, although if there is a lot of pain involved a trip to the vet may be in order.
I am hoping that there has been some improvement in behavior since you posted.

Take Care,
PHKitkat
