Is this secure for my king?

hazydaisy Aug 24, 2015 08:41 PM

Hi all!

In order to install the probe from my thermostat into my kingsnake's enclosure, I had to snip a few wires in his wire-screen top (it's one of those wire mesh covers). I just snipped three or four wires to make a small hole in the corner - it's just big enough to allow the probe and its chord to slip through; there's probably 3mm of wiggle room for the chord once everything is in place.

How likely is It that my king would make his way out of that hole? He's a juvenile and at least 10mm in width (that's a really rough estimate, but imagine the width of an average sized pinky finger). Is there a better way to install this in the future (I'll be getting a new enclosure in a few months)? I haven't been able to find cages with premade holes in the screen/lid.

just wrap some tape around the cord, so it fits tight in the hole....it will protect the cord at the same time.

Thanks! It worked perfectly.

Get a washer with a hole size that fits the probe. Use JB-Weld - the black epoxy, and glue the washer over the screen hole so the cord will slip thru washer and screen.

The epoxy will keep the screen from fraying and smooth the surface so the probe will be safe from sharp wires. Then you can put some electrical tape or whatever if needed to make the cable more snug.
