Does anyone know the number of scales for determining if the snake is a male or female when probing? I can't seem to find anything online.

Probe won't go in more than 3-4 sub-caudals for female, while a male is more than twice the number.

Thank you! That's just what I needed.
Just remember two things: don't force the probe and use a slow twirling motion, especially in females. A lubricant will help also. Google "Joseph Lazlo's" name. He was a former reptile keeper at a well known texas zoo. You might get a nice diagram showing exactly how it's done.

Google Cathy Love sexing snakes with a probe. There is a simple diagram showing it for you.
Yes, thanks. This is the same diagram I've had for over 20 years.
It's in one of my reptile folders somewhere, but haven't had the time to search. Popping hatchlings right after the first shed is still my favorite method of choice.

Thanks for the resources! I've probed snakes before, I just didn't know the scale counts for peublans since it varies a bit between species. The ones we have are adults but I read that there is no real sexual dimorphism so comparing sizes doesn't usually work well.
