Help me I'd this snake

bjason1 Sep 21, 2015 11:14 PM

My two year old found this snake on my sidewalk today. I released it in the hills by my house but I am wondering what kind of snake it is.

Found in Utah county (central Utah)
It is a baby, about 10-12 inches long

It is a great basin gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer deserticola). It's the same species as the bullsnake (Pituophis catenifer sayi), but found farther west. It's a nonvenomous constrictor that feeds mostly on rodents.
