My king snake in the Blue on cold side

oreo623 Sep 24, 2015 12:23 PM

Hi I have a king snake named Bow he is in the blu now (first stage to shed) I live in San Diego the temperatures have been in the nineties and he’s always at the cold end even now while in the Blue he’s underneath his water bowl on the cold end should I worry... Before his shedding he never hangs out to sleep under his hide on warm end which is a half log he just climbs or uses it as a tunnel I miss him on the warm end because he coils up to sleep it’s amazing what should I do ....

90 degrees is way too hot. he is looking for a place to cool down, and the water dish is the best he can do in your cage. I am in San Diego too, and when it gets over 85, I either take them inside the bedroom with the AC on, or I wrap a gallon size frozen bottle of water with a large towel and put it in the cage/tank. My snakes will crawl into the towel and stay there until the Ice melts....a day or two. If they get too hot, they may die and they certainly won't eat.

I will be ding donged, Steeve is right. Their temps should not exceed 90 and only in part of the cage. The rest of the cage should be 75 at this time of year. Of course, there is a little room to play with those temps, but Steeves right, to hot if the cage is 90F and is seeking cool.
The real right is, if the snake is healthy, it knows what temps it should be. Listen to it. Your job is to provide a range of temps it can choose from. In shed, they normally pick a higher temp then normal. As they would when digesting prey. Best of luck and good on yea Steeve

Yes, what they all said. I use any ice pack wrapped in a towel and place it in the cage.
