Bioko Island Africa, Identify please

biokoloco Nov 16, 2015 09:11 PM

This juvenile green snake slithered out of a bush we were transplanting. The locals there said it was venomous and the bigger ones had killed people in their village. I don't know what species. This island is virgin rain forest and full of forest cobras, gaboon vipers, rock pythons, green mambas, tree vipers, etc. Any help with identifying is appreciated. This snake was only 18-22 inches long. Very agile and slender.

Looks to be an African Green Bush Snake (Philothamnus semivariegatus). It's a MILDLY venomous rear-fanged snake that is basically harmless to humans.

Many folks would PROBABLY 'assume' that it is a highly venomous green mamba which it definitely is NOT.

........is also another African Green Bush Snake (Philothamnus semivariegatus), not a mamba.

I agree it looks like a Bush Snake, but there are several species and I can't tell them apart, particularly if it is a juvenile.
