Gila keeping in rack.

a_chen_tw Nov 30, 2015 01:02 PM

I am now considering to buyig a juvenile Gila . However , I have no enough enclosure to place a big tank or cage for the gila .

I am wondering if I can keeping gila in a snake rack tub without lighting and heat lamp . Or they do really need a regular environment with all "standard equipment" ?

thanks.

OK so I am replying 6 months later. You probably got your answer, but just in case..

Gilas do great in fairly low-height cages (like racks) that provide belly heat. I would not go too small a container for an adult, and by then you may want to go with a cage. Gilas can climb a 6-inch tub wall very quickly if they want, and you don't want that. Tubs are super great for babies, but give adults a little room to move around and better security for you than a 6-inch wall.

Regarding belly heat - Better conservation of humidity that way. Remember, these animals live underground the vast majority of the time where they can conserve moisture and avoid extreme temperatures. Not sure lights would be the choice heating for these animals. Radiant heat panel would be good, or heat pad/tape.
