Surprise clutch!

lecoiskin Dec 22, 2015 07:49 PM

Hi! First of all, english is not my first language (Brazilian living in Buenos Aires, Argentine)
This is my first post.
4 years ago I bought a male spider and a female pastel.

Two days ago after 62 days of incubation I got my first clutch. (10 perfect hatchlings)
I know the odds of that pairing but this is what I got:
-2 x normal
-4 x bumblebees
-3 x pastels
And one misterious baby. I have no idea what it is.
Can you guys help me?

Looks like a super pastel to me but not quite sure how that happened.

Thank you so much for your reply.
Last year I tried to mate my female pastel with my male pastel unsuccesfuly. It seems like she retained sperm.

There are two alternative hypotheses. The first is long-term sperm storage. We know that ball pythons and bloods can often store viable sperm over several seasons (one reason to be careful if you breed a female yearly to recessive lines and sell the offspring as a given het recessive, as they may actually be one from a previous year). The alternative hypothesis would be facultative parthenogenesis, again something we know that many snakes are capable of. In the latter case the offspring will be female. The only way to differentiate between the two would be genetic screening using variable nuclear DNA markers.
