Extreme Hypo Honduran gene

MarcB Mar 10, 2016 04:00 PM

I read that extreme hypo Hondurans vary in intensity of silver banding and are ranked accordingly, Doug Mong shared a link to an article written by Mike Falcon explaining the gene, but this link no longer works, anyone have this article handy to share.

What are the variants of the gene and how are they called?

Thanks for sharing

I don't have the article you mentioned but as I understand it the term extreme is reserved for only the absolute lightest hypos... pale silver/grey bands and dark ruby colored eyes. The hypos that are light but not the absolute best of the best are called ultra lights and of course regular hypos are anything form a brownish purple to nearly black.

I think extreme isn't a separate form of hypo but actually a line bred strain of hypo. People selling a "Hypo het extreme" are wrong as extreme and hypo are just different levels of the same trait. (if I remember correctly anyway)

Personally, I think the term extreme is very much overused these days, people no longer save it for the lightest animals. I see critters for sale of FB all the time labeled as extreme when they clearly aren't. Though I suppose such a trait is subject to every individual's interpretation.

Thanks for your input Aaron,

If I understand correctly, Extreme hypos can be produced from Hypo stock carrying the Extreme gene and line bred to improve/intensify the light silver/grey bands. Would be nice to read that article written by Mike Falcon, anyone?

Hi Aaron,
I wondered if the extreme "gene" is really some other gene that does not visually express itself to us outwardly unless mixed with hypo, with the result of the hypo condition being intensified. But if that were the case, then I suppose extreme x extreme would have to produce all extremes.

Do you know if an extreme hypo is bred with an extreme hypo, are all of the offspring extremes?
