I'm thinking black kingsnake but...

wde May 10, 2016 02:46 PM

I seen this snake a couple weeks ago when I was about to step outside my house. I knew pretty much zero about kingsnakes (actually any snakes) at the time, and it was nowhere to be found when I went around the house to get a better view.
My only concern about it being a Black Kingsnake is 3 days after the encounter I found a skin that measured 6'6" long. I'm in north Alabama and from what I read, the longest is around 58".

I know it's not the best pic but any help would be appreciated. I've actually seen 1 or 2 more since this pic. They were both smaller but I believe they are all staying under my porch.

black king in photo. The 6 ft skin likely belongs to a rat snake

Thanks for the response. The skin belonging to a rat snake was my guess as well but since the first sighting of the one in the pic I've seen 2-3 smaller kings that have apparently taken up residence under my sidewalk. I found the large skin 3 feet from the opening where they are going in and 2 smaller skins within 20 ft. Do you know if the rat snakes and king snakes would stay in such close proximity to each other?

Not unusual for kings and rat snakes to be in close proximity to one another or inhabit the same structure. I'd say you are lucky to have cool visitors like kings and rat snakes. Hopefully you'll see a big rat snake @ some point.
