Can king snakes eat bearded dragon eggs?

Ysabet Jun 11, 2016 02:30 PM

Hey; new member here. I have a couple of bearded dragons, one of which is female and who periodically lays a clutch of infertile eggs. This is normal; they do that without issues, though you always need to keep their calcium levels up when it's happening. I also have five corn snakes and one Variable Kingsnake, which I've only had for two weeks, and my question is: can I give the fresh eggs to my kingsnake to eat? He's healthy and active but way too thin-- the owner who the petshop got him from didn't feed him properly and I'm trying to give him plenty of nutrition. Right now I have him on a hopper mouse every 7 days, supplementing with a mid-week pinky; he eats *everything* like he's starving and has already gained a few grams. So, would these infertile eggs make good supplemental feeding? Might as well use them instead of flushing them down the toilet! Thanks.

Nutritionally all eggs are almost identical. If the snake is willing to take them then go for it. Just be prepared for some messy poop. Eggs and fish come out the other end of the snake rather sloppy.

As you are trying to put weight on the snake I would feed it as much as it is willing to eat unless you have observed it to over eat and regurgitate. Give it a little more each feeding until you see it act less "starving" at the end of the feeding session.

Best of luck,

If the king is not interested in the eggs (unlikely), then you can offer them to your corns. They are known to like eggs.

I am interested to know if that snake will eat the BD eggs. Please post your results. I do know of certain mountain kings eating small infertile bird eggs.

Variable kingsnakes are generally a higher-elevation kingsnake than say a Cal king and other getula. Not that this means anything necessarily regarding whether they eat eggs or not. Variable kings are not large-bodied snakes like a Florida king for example. Often, variable kings (and other montane kings) will not feed much in the hotter months - Aug, Sep. So, my advice is to feed it more heavily now if it will accept it.
