what kind is it

I caught this guy while cleaning an old wood pile up it's damp I live in coden,al the guys wanted to kill it I wouldn't let them I picked it up it didn't strike or even try to it is very alert I know it's not poisonous I seen the ones we have here I love snakes but never seen one like this anyone know what kind it is
