My New Grey Banded Kingsnake

eat2muchrice Oct 10, 2018 08:07 PM

I just bought a new Alterna, Blairi phase. He arrived yesterday from Reptile Raptures, I do feel like I over paid for him at $405 shipped, but he is currently the only one online that I liked. So far the little guy is very energetic and seems to be loving the custom enclosure that I have built. I am however a little worried his size and weight is a little low at 13 grams, I was told he was hatched late fall so I'm thinking he's just a month old or less. It was also stated that he was feeding on live pinkie mice and I do know that GBK snakes can be difficult training to eat frozen mice. The first night he rejected my offer of a warmed frozen, tonight I just tired scenting a new pinkie with my bearded dragon and he refused, so now I have him in a small container tub with a brained mouse and will leave it overnight. I really hope he starts eating soon. I'm probably hover parenting over this little guy and just need to give him more time to settle in, what are your guys thoughts on this? I'll get some pictures up soon.

Here is a picture of Kratos and the custom enclosure I made for him. The temperature is regulated at a high end of 85 degrees.

I know its very quiet in these forums but I'll keep posting my update and maybe keep going to help log on my new snake.

10-11-18 He refused another F/T pinkie, I also tried scenting it with my bearded dragon with no luck, then I brained it and placed them both in a small tub with all lights out for 4 hours, still did not eat.

10-12-18 Waited for the night, misted the cage and placed a warm F/T into his enclosure overnight. I know he comes out exploring at at this time but again refused to eat.

On a side note, he is very scared then he see's someone near the enclosure, dashing directly into his hide. I assume his has had very little handling time and is afraid of people.

10-13-18 tonight he ate 2 live pinky mice, pretty aggressively. Seems like he just enjoys the thrill of killing. I'll continue to attempt to get him onto frozen next week.

If it is eating two at a time, wait 10 days until he is good and hungry, feed him a live and a frozen thawed at the same time. maybe the live will create a feeding response for the F/T.
Good Luck

Thanks for the reply, I had forgot to post updates and everything is going great so far. The next week I thawed and heated frozen pinkies with hot water, I had would then drag and twitch the F/T pinky as if alive and he snatched it up quickly. He has been eating like crazy now, I'm feeding 3 day old pinkies once a week and he still seems to want more. I will be changing out to two 10 day old pinkies soon.

Thats great! Don't over feed, keep him on a weekly diet. sometimes they eat to much and regurge their food.
