albino california king snake eating tail

hello, i have a 19 year old king snake that one day decided it was going to eat his own tail. it has been red and irritated for a couple weeks so i believe he has been doing it and regurgitating his tail for some time. is there any way to prevent this other than feed him more? any idea what would be causing this? thank you in advance for any help/advice.
