Suggestion for incomoing box turtles

Katrina Oct 25, 2003 05:46 PM

For anyone taking in box turtles for adoption, rehab, ect., just wanted to let you know that it might not be a bad idea to have your vet scan for microchips. Since most box turtles in rescue are either wild-caught specimens purchased from a pet store, or they're wild-caught picked up in the woods or on the roads by an uninformed member of the public, I'm always afraid that I'll end up with someone's field study subject.

Wow- good suggestion Katrina. Never really considered that but it does make sense.

Does anyone know of any field studies that microchip their turtles? I don't know of any that does. I'd like to know what kind of success they have with the chips. Thanks.

Some of the zoos do it. The Baltimore Zoo has microchipped their box turtles.

I can't remember but I think that maybe the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (one of the pioneer organizations that started tracking/studying box turtles decades ago in MD) may now be using microchips now versus the older methods of marking the shells or using the temporary radio telementary.
