yellow throated plated lizard

pacman101 Oct 28, 2003 07:08 PM

I am going to buy a yellow throated plated lizard and I wanted to ask a few questions.
1.Is it ok to use a rubber maid tub for them?
2.Does their water bowl need to be big enough
them to swim in or just drink from?
3.how long should I handle them for each day?
4.how many crickets a week?

thanks

I would recomend a cage, Tank, or metal trough with screen top. You will also need Uv lighting, basking light, Humidity box, hide box. They will need crickets, small superworms, waxworms, some fruits, cactus, and small pinkie mice once a week. Insects are feed daily in small quanities, maybe a dozen a day. Be sure you can accomadte their needs before the purchase.

Use a water dish that they can drink from not just to soak in. A humidity box is used for hydration/shedding.

First let them acclimate for two to four weeks with minimal handling. This allows them to get familiar with their new surroundings as they are probably WC and have travled from Africa-Customs-Importer-Wholesaler/Retailer-you. Start slow and five to ten minutes every two to three days. See how they react to your movements. Belly stroking after two months will start to calm them in a transe type. Never use fast movements or loud nosies they will bolt. Set up a routine with them and they will get more acclimated. Some take up to six months to realize they are staying home now.
