Eritrean Plated Lizard - new info on old question... and new ?s

Thamnophile Oct 30, 2003 04:13 AM

Someone asked a while ago what an Eritrean plated lizard was... and upon doing a websearch for info on my new Sudan plated lizard, the info that the Honolulu Zoo had included range info for the species... one of the places was listed as "Eritrea (Ethiopia)" So it's pretty likely that the lizard in question was a Sudan plated, or what ever other plateds live in Ethiopia... I hope this helps....

Also, I haven't been able to find definite info on these areas -

How do you sex Sudan plateds? Hemipenal bulges are not apparent.... pores? head shape? behavior?

If you wind up with 2 males, will they fight if housed together?
(I am familiar with herps, so I am assuming - yes)

What size enclosure is necessary for 2 individuals?
Right now, I'm thinking 40 breeder? Or larger?

Thanx,

Lisa

Hi,

in adults you see much more pronounced femoral pores in males. Also females are of a darker colour-but that is obvious only, if your animals are from the very same area.
To my opinion, 40 g is way too small. These lizards need space to move. Otherwise this species tends to become extremely immobile and obese. To my opinion a ground space of 4 x 3 ft is about the very least for a pair of G. major.
