Tell me about Tracheloptychus petersi

DrZot Dec 01, 2003 07:44 PM

I've been admiring a pair in a nearby petstore that haven't sold in months- listed as Madagascar Rainbow Rock lizards (despite that they are always under sand!). Tell me about them- should I get them? I need new lizards like a hole in the head...

They belong to the family of plated lizards and as you know, they are from madagaskar. There they live a life very similar to a sandfishs (Scincus scincus) life in Egypt.
They need a high sand layer, very hot basking areas with high light intensities (metal halides) and a slightly moist corner for sleeping. They spend a lot of their time buried, but come out more often than the true sandfish. Breeding is not easy, but keeping is not rocket science.

Hope that helps

Thanks! Next, I wondered if they could co-habit with leopard geckos? Sounds like they may like it hotter, but I wondered about setting up a pretty large "desert" showy tank for both species.
