Info on becoming a non profit org

veronicag Jan 12, 2004 06:00 PM

I have been rescuing reptiles for a few years now and it was suggested to me that I should become a non profit organization. That way any donations of goods or money would be tax deductable.

I live in Oregon and just don't know where to start. Thanks for any advice on how to proceed.

THree steps. THe first is to incorporate in Oregon. You must submit an Article of Corporation with the names of the Board Members. About $75.00. There are books in the public library to do this. You are incorporating as a non-stock corporation.
You MUST include the 501C3 language from the Federal publication in the articles if incorportation. I had to re-submit (only $25.00).

Sent IRS S4 form to get employeer number (IRS tracks non profits by this number-we have no employees either)

THe federal publication will help with the last step. Bi-laws, articles of incorporation, handouts, etc go to the IRS. $150.00

to be recognized as a tax exempt organization under article 501 (c) 3 for the contributors to get a tax deduction for their contributions to your organization. The form is online as well as the instuctions at the IRS website. Good luck.
