i just got a lizard from petco and the bedding they gave it was the reptibark wood chips. should i keep in on the wood chips or switch it to the sand/gravel mix?

That very much depends on the species you aquired.
For most plateds, fine but dust free sand plus a moister corner with bark mulch is about the most recommendable substrate.
