Parents and reptiles need help!!!

bpmaster123 Apr 14, 2004 10:03 PM

Hi,
I have 1 bp 1 bd and 1 leopard and I am looking to get a common boa( i am 14.) I have taken care of all of my reptiles and i am just starting to pay for food and care items (just getting a job). My parents both are not very fond of reptiles and are very unopen on the topic of me getting a new snake. Before i ever buy any reptile i thouroughly research them to make sure that they are right for me and that i will be able to take care of them. I have come to the conclusion that the common boa will be perfect but my parents refuse to let me get another snake saying that we don't need another animal in this house. I feel that this is terribly unreasonable. They also tend to think that i will just "grow out" of the herp hobby which i know is not true. If any of you know of any way to change their minds or know of any sites that deal with this same issue PLEASE POST!!!

Thank you

well, i have some stuff i can show you, first, if you have parents that tend to feel pitty alot than you can try holding a card in your mouth saying what ever you want on it(Boa? Please?) it may make them feel sad for you and give you what you want. i know that a 14 year old would look pretty funny doing that but me being ten its not all that silly looking but hey, it may work. second, you can try writing a really detailed persuasive letter to your parents (thats how i got a leo once.) explaining all the good stuff about what you want and leaving out all the bad stuff. also you have a fairly good chance of getting a boa if you pay for it and its cage yourself. well, i hope my advice helps you. Good luck on getting a boa!

what the hell is a common boa? are you reffering to boas in generally or a specific species or subspecies? do you mean a red tailed boa you can buy at a pet store? if so why would you want one of those? if you want a BC get a locality pure one.

I am assuming that the poster was referring to a Columbian red-tail (Boa constrictor constrictor), and I don't think there is anything common about them. We got ours from a reputable dealer and she's a beautiful animal. I wouldn't critize anyone for wanting to get one. They make nice snakes for a first time boa owner as they tend to be less agressive than the locality bred species. Ours was our first big snake and now we are looking at a Surinam or Peruvian. Good luck if you talk your parents into one!

most of the colombian RT's are probably not BCC they are probably the colombian form of BCC and BCI. THey are a great pet for a first large snake, but when you buy one of those it supports the hybridizing of endangered species. Thats why i mentioned the locality pure boas. No one gets to see the colombian form of BCC or BCI, all they see is most likely crosses. Also, dont you think its good to actually "know" what you have? the breeders probably bought them as Colombian Red-tail so they breed them and call the colombian Red-tail and the petstores call them colombian red-tail, do you really think ALL of them are actually colombian?

Our snake is a BCI and that is what I think he was referring to as a "common boa". I don't want to get into the hybridization arguement but I think if it's a subject that matters to the buyer then they will seek out a reputable dealer. Since there are no national snake registries it's very possible that 9 times out of 10 we have no real idea how 'pure' our snakes are.

common boa, thought technically it refers to the whole constrictor complex. Colombians are generally called commons, especially in the pet trade.
